Thoughts on a Day of Prayer?

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco is advocating a "Day of Prayer" for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. As I am not attempting to detract from the horror of what those people must be experiencing at this time, I am almost loathe to even mention this. Almost.

Do government officials have the right or the responsibility to request that people ask for help and comfort from a higher being that may or may not exist? (I think most of you know that I do in fact believe in a higher being...I just haven't figured out my place in that being's universe yet.) And just because some assume that such a being does exist does that mean that everyone is required to do so?

So let's discuss. What are your thoughts on a government official advocating such a thing?

I think its dumb - separation of church and state... seriously arent they being hypocrites by staying on everyone's case about being politically correct and then they go and do this kind of stuff

not to mention... why would God want this, he doenst want people to just use Him for things

let me just make it clear to anyone reading that I am a Christian, but dont believe in forcing my beliefs on anyone else...

why do people who already pray need a govt reminder?

I think it's irresponsible for her to request people to sit around and think real hard when she should be requesting food, water, shelter, additional hands, money donations, and just about anything else they can think of that will actually have an effect.

also, your commenting popup thing is severely screwy and very annoying to use.

I figure that's about as close to "do no harm" as a politician can get without having the mouth duct-taped shut. So I'm all for it.

Since we're talking politics (sorta):

I was going to say I was fine with it, but the more I think about it, why do we need a government official telling us to pray? If we're the praying type, we're going to do it anyway, and if we're not, we're not going to just because some talking head tells us to.
