New Star Trek Movie

TVGuide.com reports:

J.J. Abrams Beams Up More Star Trek
The Star Trek franchise is being given new life by Lost cocreator J.J. Abrams, the man behind this summer's Mission: Impossible III, Variety reports. The as-yet-untitled feature, slated for a fall 2008 release, will focus on the early adventures of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy; Abrams will direct as well as help write and produce the pic. Is anyone else getting goose bumps, or am I just a big ol' Star Trek geek? Seriously, no one's Kirk Halloween costume could ever compare to mine.

Meh,

One conclusion that all stories have mentioned is that Abrams is likely to take this in a 'completely new direction'.

One points out that this worked well for "Battlestar Galactica" and so this should be a good thing.

Now, its true that taking it in a different direction from Enterprise, Nemesis, Voyager (sorry Holly!) and Insurrection is unlikely to be WORSE, but that's not necessarily better.

When Moore and Eick brought BSG back, they were bringing back a show that had been a moderate success 25 years previously. I had seen all of 4 episodes in the decade prior to the release of the new miniseries. The show had been best known for its camp, and never really took itself too seriously.

Trek is a whole other animal, and the odor of its last incarnations still lingers over Paramount. Trek had been languishing for a decade when they brought the original cast to the big screen. And they had all the good will of the original series continuing to build.

Right now they want to come in with barely a 3 year hiatus when fan loyalty has to be at a serious ebb.

I am not looking forward to this. They should wait ten years, at a minimum, and then come back when people are really READY for a new Trek adventure. Let the foul taste of their last few offerings recede in memory.

Let it go.
