Anybody still want to argue that we don't live in a patriarchal society?

Then click here. Hopefully with every case like this that gets filed, America will move towards full equality of the sexes and stop making laws based solely on gender.

There is no California law suggesting that the name-change process should be different for men than women. The marriage application simply doesn't give the option because almost no one does it! Yes, of course, this is because we live in a patriarchal society but, in this case at least, it is patriarchy by convention not by law.

The real problem in this case is that the couple waited until AFTER they had been issued a marriage license with their original names to complain. If they had made a point of it at the time they applied for the license, things MIGHT have gone differently.

Anytime you want to do something differently than 99% of the country, you have to be prepared to deal with the difficulties that you are likely to run into. It is not fair, it is not right, it is not good, and it should be fixed whenever possible but it is a fact of life.

I'd go for "society that used to be patriarchial and is still cleaning out some of the residue."
