Poignant

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I actually felt, for the very first time, what the word "poignant" really means. It was this morning and I was at my desk at work.

Webster defines poignant as:

1 : pungently pervasive
2 a (1) : painfully affecting the feelings : piercing (2) : deeply affecting : touching b : designed to make an impression : cutting
3 a : pleasurably stimulating b : being to the point : apt

I was listening to a song on my cd player and the music was slow and haunting, thereby catching my attention. I looked the lyrics up online just to ensure that I was hearing correctly, and yep, it is maybe one of the best songs ever written. It contains an honesty and a purety that is rare to find in songs. I'm thinking maybe the reason we don't get songs like this too often is because the songwriters are unable to bare their souls to the world.

But I'm glad that this particular songwriter opened up. Because for some reason I feel a bit more peaceful inside now.

Iron & Wine with "Such Great Heights"

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images and
When we kiss they're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God himself did make us into
Corresponding shapes like puzzles pieces
From the clay

True, it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this
That catch my troubled head
When you're away, when I am missing you to death

When you were out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great heights
"Come down now," they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
"Come down now," but we'll stay

I've tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
Sounded thin upon listening

That frankly will not fly
You will hear the shrillest highs
And lowest lows with the windows down
When this is guiding you home

They will see us waving from such great heights
"Come down now," they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
"Come down now," but we'll stay...
