Actual Conversation

Roommate: Watcha watchin'?

Me: Babylon 5.

Roommate: Ah. You finished West Wing?

Me: Yep.

Roommate: Did you ever watch Saved by the Bell?

Me: Sometimes. I was really more of an X-Files kinda girl.

Roommate: Angel and Buffy are good but I think Buffy is better than Angel.

Me: Yeah, I totally agree. Although I've not seen all of Angel. A lot of people say season 5 of Angel was the best of that series.

Roommate: I don't agree. I thought season 5 ended really badly. "I get the dragon." Who says that?

Me: I haven't actually seen that episode.

Roommate: Oh. What about 90210 and Melrose Place?

Me: Oh yeah. My family watched those all the time. Those shows were in their heyday when I lived in Jamaica and my aunt used to tape them and send them to us.

Roommate: 90210 and Melrose Place were really the start of the true sitcom, doncha think? I mean, they catered to young people and they were long runnning and stuff.

Me: Huh?

Roommate: No really, they were what kicked off the age of the sitcom.

Me: Um, sure. Yeah.

Wow.

Wow. A polite, pleasing conversation with someone who has absolutely no idea what the fuck they are talking about.

In other news, I think General Hospital was really the start of the action thriller prime time hourlongs.

Oh, and Reading Rainbow was really the start of the teen-drama wave on the WB.

In the immortal words of Strong Bad, "Holy Crap!"

90210 was the origin of targetting 'Thirtysomething' at a 15-30 crowd.

And if I had the opportunity to get dibs on slaying a dragon (not to be confused with dibs on being burninated by a dragon, which would be altogether more likely were I to be brought into the general milieu of a dragon) I'd totally say, "Me, I kinda wanna slay the dragon."

Admittedly, without 90210, they wouldn't have thought that a 15-30 crowd could support an hourlong with arcs, so it is probably the origin of the teen-oriented dramedy, which was the way Joss managed to actually get Buffy made.

But I seem to remember some sort of 'The Honeymooners' which was the forrunner of 'M*A*S*H', I think. And 'Soap' as the forrunner of the modern 'Arrested Development'. And 'Road Rules' as the forrunner of the modern 'Holy Crap, when are they gonna show some goddamn videos?'.

In an interesting bit of temporal non-linearity, "That '70s Show" was a forrunner of "Happy Days".

Ryan: When I'm talking to her I almost always feel like I'm talking with someone who has no idea what she's talking about.

Addie: You wanna live with her for awhile? : )

David: LOL...somebody's been watching some Strong Bad emails, huh. And yeah, I was amused at her misquoting of that line as well. Good times.
