Vista

I got my new computer from Dell because I needed it quickly and relatively inexpensively. It came with Windows Vista and I love it. The menus are awesome, the color schemes are attractive, and it's a lot easier to get used to than XP was, even though it's nothing like XP.

I only have a few complaints:

1. When I open folders I like to see everything in that folder in list form. With Vista, the default is to have the items listed with an icon. When I discovered this I immediately changed the default to what I like, only I then have to open each folder three or four separate times and change the view to "list" before it takes effect. That's slightly irritating.

2. I cannot open WebCT with Firefox. WebCT is the tool by which UTD locates all of their class websites in one convenient location. I can only open WebCT with Internet Explorer because it apparently makes Firefox's head explode.

3. Internet Explorer is not working right now, and in fact, hasn't all day. I've been trying to log into WebCT all day but it won't go past the IE home page. Everything freezes and that hourglass mocks me with it's never-ending rotations. It even pops up a little friendly box that says, "Internet Explorer is not responding. Microsoft is looking for a solution to this problem."

Well, I have a solution to this problem. DON'T SUCK. With a lot less sucking there would be a lot more IE actually working. How hard is it to not suck? Bill Gates, you have more money than God and you still haven't found a way to stop sucking? Seriously? Because dude, I'd look into that if I were you. YOU ARE MICROSOFT. You cornered the market on this technology! You really can't afford to suck this much. You're pissing me off and making me wish I would've just sprung the extra cash for a Mac.

Ah, but don't you see? If you'd bought a Mac would wouldn't be able to view [IE only websites] at all. And that's exactly why MS can afford to suck so much. (see also: monopoly)

(According to a quick Google search, you should be able to use WebCT in Firefox but that's beside the point. You might want to make sure you have Java installed and working in Firefox. Also, v6 maybe works better than v4.)

The WebCT vs. Firefox thing is because WebCT is not compatible with Firefox. So no matter what I do there, it won't get better until UTD upgrades WebCT. All of our class stuff is now on v6 so on v4 it's all empty. Even if the class shows up on v4 it doesn't matter because the professors only communicate through v6. Stupid technologies. :)

Someone I know got a new lap top that came with Vista, as well. She mainly works from home, but does go into her office from time-to-time. Outlook and Vista are sucking for her. Unless she is at her office, she can only RECEIVE e-mails; she can't send or reply. Can't really work from home if you can't communicate with anyone. Apparently there is no solution to this problem. Nice.

sealegs- has she tried running this command?

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

It is also common for ISPs (like AOL or SBC/ATT) to block outgoing email on port 25. That would cause sending to work at the office but not at home. But then that wouldn't be specific to Vista.
